The Gesamtschulen, created during the educational reforms of the 1970s, were intended to replace the traditional division of schools into Hauptschule, Realschule and Gymnasium. They enable students to learn a subject at a level appropriate to them: for example, if their week mathematics has prevented them going to a Gymnasium, they can still study, say, languages to a high level at the Gesamtschule.
